From Middle English ij appel, from Old English ēaġæppel (“eyeball, pupil”), from Proto-Germanic *augaaplaz, equivalent to eye +‎ apple. Cognate with West Frisian eachappel (“pupil”), Dutch oogappel (“eyeball; pupil”), German Augapfel (“eyeball”), Danish øjeæble (“eyeball”), Norwegian øyeeple (“eyeball”).
