From Proto-Germanic *fadurjô (paternal uncle), from Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tḗr (father). Akin to Old Frisian federia (paternal uncle), Old High German fataro, fatureo, fetiro (paternal uncle, male cousin) (whence German Vetter (male cousin).
