Etymology

From Old Swedish forgæta, from Middle Low German vorgeten, from Old Saxon fargetan, from Proto-Germanic *fragetaną from *fra- (for-) +‎ *getaną (to attain, acquire, get, receive, hold). Cognate with Danish forgæde, forgætte, German vergessen, Luxembourgish vergiessen, Esperanto forgesi, West Frisian fergette, ferjitte, forjitte (to forget), Saterland Frisian ferjeete, Dutch vergeten (to forget), English forget, Scots forget, forȝet (to forget). Equivalent to för- +‎ gitta.
