English[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From feminist sympathizer; modelled on earlier comsymp.

femsymp (plural femsymps)

  1. (slang, derogatory, rare) A person who sympathizes with the aims and beliefs of feminists.
    • 1974, Jane Howard, A Different Woman, page 380:
Nothing is less persuasive than a tirade from a rigidly orthodox heretic. I'm a sympathizer, a femsymp if you will, but some feminists come on so abrasive they alarm even me. I can only lament the impression they must make on the undecided.
    • 1991, Keyboard, volume 17, numbers 7-12, page 7:
A friend of mine says that this is because women have been systematically excluded by a hard core of "good old boys," but that strikes me as knee-jerk femsymp rhetoric, and anyway it doesn't change the facts.
    • 1994, Time, volume 143, numbers 1-9, page 120:
[] you few loathsome Lecters and Dahmerites, you libertarians, deer hunters, anchormen, bureaucrats, convicts, bleeding hearts, bikers, femsymps and harassers, Rotarians and punks. Welcome, over-mortgaged yuppie.
