From Proto-West Germanic *fimbil, *fimbul, from Proto-Germanic *fimbulaz and Proto-Germanic *fimfilaz. Cognate with Old Norse fimbul- (mighty, great) and Old Norse fífl (fool, idiot, buffoon).
