From Middle English flon, flone, flan from Old English flān, from Proto-Germanic *flainaz (hook, spear with a tip), from Proto-Indo-European *pleyn- (metal arrow, hook, spear-head). Akin to Old Norse fleinn (hook, barbed weapon, javelin, arrow).
