Etymology[edit]

From Old Norse flina, from Proto-Germanic *flinōną, which could have meant "bare (the teeth)," from Proto-Indo-European *plēy-, *plī-, from *pel-, *pʰel, *spʰel- (to cleave, to split off, to cast off).[1]
