Usage notes

[edit]
  • Sometime around the late 1780s, the spelling forbade (which had been on the upswing since the start of that century, while forbad was becoming less common) overtook forbad,[1] and forbade is now the usual spelling throughout contemporary English, about thirty times more common than forbad.[2] The pronunciation with /beɪd/ is also more common than the pronunciation with /bæd/.
