From Middle English forhelen, from Old English forhelan (to cover up, conceal), from Proto-Germanic *frahelaną (to conceal, hide), equivalent to for- +‎ hele. Cognate with Dutch verhelen (to conceal), German verhehlen (to hide, conceal).
