  1. (rail transport) Provision of four running lines on a stretch of railway track, usually two in each direction.
    • 1960 June, “Talking of trains: Sunday on the G.N. line”, in Trains Illustrated, page 322:
      Arlesey: Demolition of Three Counties station in connection with four-tracking through Arlesey.
    • 2020 August 12, “Network News: Release of £589 million kick-starts Trans-Pennine Route upgrade”, in Rail, page 9:
      DfT said the £589m that has been released will be used on design and enabling works for TRU. This includes partial electrification, a new through platform at Huddersfield, and around eight miles of extra four-tracking.
