Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Turkic *kāĺ. Cognate with dialectal Azerbaijani qaş (mountain chain; slanting trees in the attic of the house), dialectal Turkish kaş (steep cliffs, cliffs; hill, mountain; border, embankment made by piling soil in vineyards and gardens; wall, the top of the wall), also dialectal Uyghur [script needed] (qaş, side).
