Etymology

[edit]

Probably from Arabic قَبَالَة (qabāla, bail, guaranty), though a derivation from Proto-Germanic *gabulą (tribute) has also been proposed. The sense of "alliance" has been influenced by gavella (sheaf).

  1. tax, duty
  2. (historical) gabelle (salt tax)
