From Old Galician / Old Galician-Portuguese, from Old French gaiole, from Medieval Latin gabiola, for Vulgar Latin *caveola, a diminutive of Latin cavea (“cavity, coop, cage”). Doublet of xaula, borrowed again from Middle French.
