Unknown. Probably from a substrate language. Possibly related to Proto-Brythonic *gwɨmon, from Proto-Celtic *wimmonā, and this possibly from a non-IE substrate language or from Proto-Indo-European *weyb- (to wind around). Cognate with Portuguese gamão, Spanish gamón and Catalan gamó.
