Etymology

Obscure. Either related to French gaspiller (to waste), from Old French gaspail (bullet of wheat), or to Spanish caspa (fragment).[1] In the first case, from Proto-Germanic *wisp- (measure of grain) or from Proto-Germanic *gaspilþijaną (to destroy, waste), from Proto-Indo-European *spel- (to break off, split).
