Etymology

From Old Galician-Portuguese geada, from Latin gelāta, from gelō (I freeze), from gelu (frost), from Proto-Indo-European *gel- (cold). Doublet of gelada. Compare Italian gelata, Spanish helada, French gelée, Catalan gelada.
