Esperanto[edit]

Etymology[edit]

ge- (both sexes (or: of any sex)) +‎ amikoj (friends)

Pronunciation[edit]

  • (file)
  • IPA(key): [ɡeaˈmikoj]
  • Rhymes: -ikoj
  • Hyphenation: ge‧a‧mi‧koj

Noun[edit]

geamikoj (accusative geamikojn)

  1. (plural only, dated) friends, including both female(s) and male(s)
    • 1906 July, “Kroniko”, in The British Esperantist, volume 2, number 19, page 75:
En la somero ni esperas babiladi kun niaj Manĉestraj geamikoj ĉe ekskursoj.
In the summer we waited to chat with our Manchester friends on the trips.

Usage notes[edit]

Dated construction by writers who understood amiko as a masculine noun. Since amiko is gender-neutral now, the ge- prefix is superfluous, unless one wishes to emphasize that a group of friends includes both females and males.
