gegë
Albanian
Etymology
- According to Pokorny from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Ancient Greek (Attic) γίγας (gígas, “giant”), from the Homeric mythology (the giants of the Acroceraunian mountains), probably denoting originally war-like invading tribes descending from Epirus. Compare Arbëreshë (dialectal and archaic) glatë (“tall, long”), Albanian gjatë (“tall, long”) (Standard, Tosk), Gheg-Albanian gat (“tall, long”), Albanian gatë (“heron”) and Latin gigas (“giant”).[1]
- Possibly from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Albanian *ghaughau̯, after an onomatopoeic sound, in opposition to shqip (“clear language”)(Can this(+) etymology be sourced?). Compare gaga (“goose sound”). However, since shqip (“clear language”) derived from the northern dialect Gheg itself; an onomatopoeic origin does not seem plausible.
