From Proto-Germanic *geldaną, from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeldʰ- (to pay). Cognates include Old Saxon geldan, Dutch gelden, Old English ġieldan (English yield), Old Norse gjalda, (Danish gælde, Swedish gälla), Gothic 𐌲𐌹𐌻𐌳𐌰𐌽 (gildan), 𐌿𐍃𐌲𐌹𐌻𐌳𐌰𐌽 (usgildan) and 𐍆𐍂𐌰𐌲𐌹𐌻𐌳𐌰𐌽 (fragildan).
