From Old Danish gællæ, *giallæ, from Old Norse gella, gjalla, from Proto-Germanic *gellaną (to shout), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰel- (to shout).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ɡjalə/, [ˈɡ̊jalə]

Verb[edit]

gjalde (imperative gjald, infinitive at gjalde, present tense gjalder, past tense gjaldede, perfect tense har gjaldet)

  1. to resound, reverberate, echo
