From Middle English goddoghter, goddoȝter, from Old English goddohtor (“goddaughter”), equivalent to god + daughter. Cognate with Danish guddatter (“goddaughter”), Swedish guddotter (“goddaughter”), Icelandic guðdóttir (“goddaughter”).
