Norwegian Nynorsk[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

  • (jellyfish and flower): gøple

Etymology[edit]

Uncertain. According to different sources, may be related to gopel (a dirt mass), Old Norse gaupn (gowpen) or Southern Sami gåbloe (lung) (compare Finnish kupla (bubble)). Also compare Southern Sami boeltʼaajjan-gåbloe (fireweed), literally “bear lung”.
