English

Etymology

From great- +‎ grandmother.

Noun

great-grandmother (plural great-grandmothers)

  1. The mother of one's grandparent.

Usage notes

Additional instances of "great-" can be prepended to the term, each indicating one further generation of ancestry. For large numbers of generations a number can be substituted, for example, "fourth great-grandmother", "four-greats grandmother" or "four-times-great-grandmother".
