Of Germanic origin. Probably Old High German diverh ("sloping, slanted"). Compare with Spanish and Catalan guercho, Occitan guer, Ladin guersch and viersch, Breton gwilc'her, German quer (crosswise, crossways), Latin guelcus and Illyrian gverok.
