Etymology[edit]

Of Germanic origin. Probably Old High German dwerah, twerh ‘crooked’ (continued in German überzwech ‘across’, Zwerchfell ‘diaphram’). Compare with Spanish and Catalan guercho, Ladin guersch, viersch.
