Etymology

From Basque guiristino, the Basque adaptation of the Spanish cristino, the term for the liberal forces in the Spanish Civil War, after the then Queen Cristina.

guiri m or f (plural guiris)

  1. (dated) A supporter of Queen Isabella II of Spain, a cristino.
  2. (Spain) A foreign tourist, normally referring to fair-skinned tourist on package holidays on the Spanish Mediterranean coast from the mid-twentieth century.
  3. gorse, furze.
  4. (dated, Spain) police agent from la Guardia Civil.
