Etymology

Of unknown origin. It is used in the subjunctive mode of jön (to come) instead of the regular subjunctive forms. Its original form may have been jerj. The leading j- to gy- assimilation is similar to jöngyön, a dialectal variant. For the dropping of the final j compare eper, szeder.[1]
