From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Balto-Slavic *giʔ(s)laʔ, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *gʷiHl-. Cognate with the second part of Old Prussian compound pette-gislo (back vein), Latvian dzīsla (vein) and Common Slavic *žila (vein, tendon).
