Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Ottoman Turkish حال بو كه (ḥal bu ki),[1][2] from حال (ḥal) + بو (bu) + كه (ki),[3] equivalent to hâl (“state, situation, circumstance”) + bu (“this”) + ki (“that”), literally “the state is (this) that”. Cognates with Azerbaijani halbuki, Uyghur ھالبۇكى (halbuki), Uzbek holbuki.
