Swedish

Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Middle Low German herkomst, herkumpst. Compare similarly borrowed ankomst (arrival) and tillkomst (coming into existence, creation). The second element -komst is from Proto-Germanic *kumþiz, but is not a native Swedish formation, rather a borrowing of the Middle Low German suffix. The native Swedish descendant of *kumþiz would be -kund.
