Etymology

[edit]

Borrowed from Malay hari raya (holiday; festival; Eid). In Vocabulario de la lengua tagala, it was defined as a particular fast, but Potet (2013) thinks that it refers not to a fast, but Eid al-Fitr which ends the Ramadan fast. Compare Tausug Haylaya. Doublet of Hariraya Puasa.
