Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *harδ, from Proto-Indo-European *HorT- ‘vine-branch, grape-vine, shot of a vine’[1]. Possibly related to ardh ~ erdha 'to come, derive'. For sense development compare Germanic *stamniz, both 'tree stalk' and 'tribe, origin'. Possibly the source of the name of the Illyrian tribe Ardiaei
