From határon túl (beyond the border) +‎ -i (of, from, -related, adjective-forming suffix), from határ (border, boundary) +‎ -on (on, case suffix) +‎ túl (beyond). Literally: “of/from [the regions] beyond the border”, referring to the current state borders of Hungary.
