From Old Galician and Old Galician-Portuguese edra (13th century, Cantigas de Santa Maria), from Latin hedera (“ivy”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰed- (“to seize, grasp, take”). Cognate with Portuguese hera and Spanish yedra.
