Etymology

From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Middle High German heimlich, heimelich, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German heimilīh, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *haimalīkaz, equivalent to Heim +‎ -lich. Compare Dutch heimelijk, English homely, Danish hemmelig, Swedish hemlig. More at homely.
