Etymology[edit]

Unknown. Probably related to hage (enclosed pasture) and hägnad (fence). See Old Swedish ohægdhom (without restraint), implying the existence of the unattested Old Swedish *hæghþ (restraint). See also Old English hegian (to hedge).
