From Old Danish hælsæn, helse, from Old Norse heilsa, from Proto-Germanic *hailisǭ, cognate with Swedish hälsa. Ultimately derived from the noun *hailaz (whole, sound). Doublet of helse (health) and hilsen (greeting).
