German

Etymology

From Middle High German hiutec, from Old High German hiutīg, derived from hiutu (today). Analyzable as heute +‎ -ig.

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): /ˈhɔʏ̯tɪç/ (standard)
  • IPA(key): /ˈhɔʏ̯tɪk/ (common form in southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland)
  • Audio:(file)
  • Hyphenation: heu‧tig

Adjective

heutig (comparative heutiger, superlative am heutigsten)

  1. today's (of the day of today)
  2. contemporary; present-day (of the present age)
    • 1957, Karlheinz Deschner, Kitsch, Konvention und Kunst. Eine literarische Streitschrift, München: Paul List, page 49:
Gewiß, auch Thomas Mann hat den Goetheschen Stil übernommen. Aber wenn man Mann liest, dann ist einem doch moderner, heutiger zumute, als wenn man Hans Carossa liest.
Certainly, Thomas Mann too has taken over the style of Goethe. But when one reads Mann, one feels more modern, more contemporary, than when one reads Hans Carossa.

Usage notes

The word is only occasionally comparable.
