Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish خطابا (hitaben), from Arabic خِطَابًا (ḵiṭāban), adverbial accusative of خِطَاب (ḵiṭāb, speech). By surface analysis, hitap (speech) +‎ -en. Compare Azerbaijani xitabən and Uzbek xitoban.
