Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Hmong-Mien *hlaH (moon, month), from Sino-Tibetan. Cognate with White Hmong hli and Western Xiangxi Miao [Fenghuang] hlaot. Compare the Sino-Tibetan root that gave birth to S'gaw Karen လါ (lah), Burmese (la.), Chepang लाह् (lah).
