Derived from Proto-West Germanic *hnukēn, from Proto-Germanic *hnukāną (to be bent, flex), possibly through Proto-West Germanic *hnokuk (diminutive noun), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *knewg- (to bend, pinch), from Proto-Indo-European *ken- (to pinch).
