Etymology

Iterative form of dialectal hoppen. The latter is formally a (deprecated template usage) [etyl] German Low German and Central German variant of hüpfen (to hop); it also old, however, in Alemannic dialects (where it may be borrowed from the North or formed independently through onomatopoeia).
