From Sanskrit श्वशुर (śváśura), from Proto-Indo-European *swéḱuros (“father-in-law”). Cognate with Khowar اشپاشور (išpašúr), Hindi ससुर (sasur), Northern Kurdish xezûr, Catalan sogre, German Schwäher.
