Modified from Old Galician-Portuguese emperador (compare Galician emperador), a semi-learned term taken from Latin imperātor (“emperor; commander”) (compare Spanish emperador, Catalan emperador, Occitan emperador, French empereur, Italian imperatore, Romanian împărat).
