Dutch[edit]
Alternative forms[edit]
- jagtschip (obsolete)
Etymology[edit]
Compound of jacht (“haste”) or jachten (“to hurry”) + schip (“ship”). Perhaps a modification of Middle Dutch jageschip. Although jachtschip is attested later than jacht (“yacht”), it is often supposed to be the older form; for one, it explains the neuter gender of jacht.[1]
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
jachtschip n (plural jachtschepen, diminutive jachtscheepje n)
- (now uncommon and often historical) A yacht (light, fast vessel), in particular a sailing yacht.
- Synonyms: jacht, jachtschuit
Derived terms[edit]
- jacht (“yacht”) (see etymology above)
