From Late Middle English genet, from Old French genet, from Old Catalan genet or Old Spanish ginete (small fast horse; light horseman), from Andalusian Arabic زَنَاتِي (zanātī), the Zenati or Zenata Berbers, known as excellent horse breeders. Doublet of Zenati.
