[edit]From jord (“earth, ground”) + eple (“apple”). Possibly from Dutch aardappel (“earth apple; potato”), a calque of the French pomme de terre (“an apple from the earth, a potato”). Compare Icelandic jarðepli and Faroese jørðepli.
