Ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *yugtós, borrowed from one of the Indo-European languages that Finnish has had contact with; either Proto-Germanic *juhtaz (compare Old English ġeiht), Proto-Indo-Aryan *yuktás (compare Sanskrit युक्त (yukta)) or Proto-Baltic [Term?] (compare Latvian jūgt).
