[edit]Inherited from Ottoman Turkish كاغد (ḱāğıd), from Common Turkic [Term?] (compare Karakhanid [script needed] (kāɣïd, “paper”)), ultimately from Sogdian 𐼸𐼰𐼲𐼹𐼰 (kʾγδʾ /kāγaδā/); further etymology is unknown, perhaps a borrowing from Old Chinese 紙 (OC *kjeʔ).
