[edit]From Old Swedish kø̄pa, from Old Norse keypa, kaupa, from Proto-Germanic *kaupijaną, *kaupōną (“to buy, trade”), from *kaupô (“innkeeper, merchant”), Latin caupo (“innkeeper, shopkeeper, tradesman”), caupōnor (“to trade, haggle”). Cognate with Danish købe, Norwegian kjøpe, German kaufen, Dutch kopen and English cheap.
