From Old Swedish kø̄pa, from Old Norse keypa, kaupa, from Proto-Germanic *kaupijaną, *kaupōną, from Latin caupo, cauponari, from Proto-Indo-European *kaup-, *ḱaup-, *kwap-, *ḱwap- (“merchant”). Cognate with Danish købe, Norwegian kjøpe, German kaufen, Dutch kopen, Finnish kauppa and English cheap.
